☀️ Classroom Activity

Sunshine Spelling
& Counting Adventure

Ages 3–6 · Whole Class or Small Groups · 3 Rounds

Your Sunny Day rug already has everything you need built right in — letters marching around the border, clouds numbered 1 through 9, and a big warm sun glowing at the center. This activity turns all three into a three-round game where every student has a role, and the whole class ends up at the sun.

It's part phonics, part math, part imaginative play — and it works beautifully because the rug does the visual storytelling. Students aren't just answering questions at their desks. They're on a journey, and the sun is where everyone is headed.

🗺️ Setup
☁️
Assign each student to a cloud (numbers 1–9) or a border letter
📇

Three Rounds, One Sun

Each round has a different challenge. Run all three in sequence for a full session, or use individual rounds as quick warm-ups.

🌈
Round One
Alphabet Walk

Students stand on their assigned border letter. When the teacher calls out a letter, the student standing there steps up and says a word that starts with that letter. Get it right — take a step toward the sun.

1
Teacher calls out a letter from the border — "The letter S!"
2
The student standing on that letter responds with a word that starts with it — "Sun! Sandwich! Snail!"
3
Correct answer → take a step toward the sun. Not sure? Ask a classmate for help — collaboration is always allowed.
Teacher tip: Let hesitant students call a "lifeline" — asking a friend — before answering. It keeps the game inclusive and teaches children it's okay to ask for help.
☁️
Round Two
Counting Clouds

Now the clouds take center stage. The teacher calls a cloud number, and the student standing on it responds — clapping, jumping, or solving a math problem with that number.

1
Teacher calls a cloud number — "Cloud number 6!"
2
Basic: Student claps or jumps that many times, counting aloud with each one.
3
Advanced: Student creates a math problem using that number — "6 + 2 = 8" or "6 − 4 = 2."
4
Success → move toward the sun. The class can count along to support each hopper.
Teacher tip: Have the whole class clap along with the counting student — it turns every individual turn into a group moment and keeps everyone engaged between their own turns.
☀️
Round Three
Sunshine Challenge

The final round brings everything together. The teacher places a beanbag "sunbeam" on a letter or cloud. That student faces a choice of three challenges — and gets to pass the sunbeam when they succeed.

1
Teacher places the sunbeam (beanbag) on any letter or cloud number on the rug.
2
The student at that spot picks their challenge:
A
Say a word that starts with the letter
B
Count up to the number, or solve a simple math problem with it
C
Spell a short word that uses that letter
3
If they succeed → pass the sunbeam to any classmate of their choice. That student goes next.
Why it works: Letting students choose who gets the sunbeam next creates genuine excitement and investment. Every child is paying close attention, hoping to be picked.

For Every Age

The same rug, the same game — tuned to where your students are right now.

🌱 Ages 3–4

Younger Learners

  • Focus purely on letter and number recognition — no words needed
  • Let students point to their letter or cloud rather than answering verbally
  • Use visual flashcards with pictures alongside letters
  • Celebrate every attempt, correct or not — participation is the goal
🌟 Ages 5–6

Older Learners

  • Add phonics challenges — blend sounds, identify short vowels
  • Introduce simple addition and subtraction using cloud numbers
  • Challenge students to spell a full word using their letter
  • Ask for a complete sentence using their word — storytelling bonus round
🕺💃🙌

When Everyone Reaches the Sun…

The game ends with a Sunshine Dance — jump, spin, high-five the person next to you, or make up your own move. Nobody loses. Everyone practiced. The sun is for everyone.
