Sunshine Spelling & Counting Adventure
Posted by Ed Shapiro on
(Ages: 3-6 | Players: Whole class or small groups)
Objective:
Students will practice letter recognition, phonics, and counting skills while moving around the rug in a fun and interactive way.
Game Setup:
- Assign each student to a cloud (numbers 1-9) or a letter on the border of the rug.
- Have flashcards with letters, simple words, and numbers prepared.
- Optional: Use a small beanbag as a "sunbeam" to pass around.
How to Play:
Round 1: Alphabet Walk 🌈
- The teacher calls out a letter, and the student standing on that letter says a word that starts with that letter.
- If correct, they take a step toward the sun in the middle.
- If unsure, they can ask a classmate for help.
Round 2: Counting Clouds ☁️
- The teacher calls out a number, and the student standing on that number claps or jumps that many times.
- To make it more advanced, students can create a math problem using that number (e.g., "4 + 2 = 6").
- The student then moves toward the sun.
Round 3: Sunshine Challenge ☀️
- The teacher places the beanbag on a letter or cloud number.
- The student at that spot must either:
- Say a word that starts with the letter.
- Count up to the number or solve a simple math problem.
- Spell a short word that uses that letter.
- If they succeed, they pass the "sunbeam" to another student of their choice.
Winning the Game:
- Once all students reach the sun, they do a "Sunshine Dance" (jump, spin, or high-five a friend).
- Everyone wins when they've participated and practiced their skills.
Variations for Different Ages:
- Younger learners: Focus on letter and number recognition.
- Older learners: Add phonics challenges, simple addition/subtraction, or storytelling with the letters.
