✦ A Story from Room 7 ✦

One morning, Miss Thompson's class discovered something extraordinary: a mysterious new rug, black with colorful letters and pictures. And when they gathered around it, the adventure began.

One ordinary morning, the children of Miss Thompson's class walked into Room 7 to find something that had not been there the day before. In the center of the classroom, where the floor had always been bare, lay a rug. It was black, with colorful letters arranged across its surface in bright, vivid rows, each one paired with a small illustrated picture.

The children gathered around it, eyes wide.

"Class," said Miss Thompson, her voice carrying a note of excitement that the children had only heard before on field trip mornings, "today we're going on an alphabet adventure."

A
✦ A is for Apple

Miss Thompson pointed to the first letter, and as she said the words, a shiny red apple appeared right in the air above the rug. The children reached for it, but it was made of light, warm and red and absolutely perfect.

B
✦ B is for Bee

A little bee buzzed into the classroom, looping twice around the ceiling light before settling on a child's shoulder with the gentlest of landings. It did not sting. It just buzzed softly, as if it had something important to say.

C
✦ C is for Cat

A fluffy cat appeared at the classroom door, walked the full length of the rug with enormous dignity, and settled into a tidy circle on the letter C. It meowed softly, exactly once.

As they progressed through the alphabet, the room continued to fill with magic. Dogs barked from nowhere and everywhere at once. A gleaming egg cracked open to reveal not a chick but a perfectly written lowercase e. Fish swam through the classroom air as if the ceiling had become the sea.

G
✦ G is for Guitar

The children giggled as a guitar materialized beside the chalkboard and began to play itself, strings moving on their own to produce a tune that every child in the room somehow already knew.

H
✦ H is for Heart

Hearts floated above their heads, rose-colored and slow-turning, and if you looked at them just right they had the children's initials inscribed on the inside.

L
✦ L is for Lion

A lion appeared, but it was a jolly lion, the kind that wore a small crown and bowed before sitting down. Its roar, when it came, was more like a very loud yawn.

Q
✦ Q is for Queen

A queen arrived with great composure and sat in the teacher's chair without being invited to, which no one seemed to mind because she was clearly a very reasonable queen with excellent posture.

U
✦ U is for Unicorn

The class saw a unicorn, and it was exactly as wonderful as they had always suspected it would be. It left a trail of something like light and something like kindness as it moved between the desks.

X
✦ X is for X-Ray

When they reached X, x-rays appeared against the classroom windows, showing everyone's silly bone structure. The children looked at their own hands in delight, wiggling their fingers to watch the bones move inside the light.

Y
✦ Y is for Yak

A yak appeared in the doorway, enormous and cheerful, with a woolly coat the color of sunshine. It surveyed the classroom with calm, wise eyes, then gave a single dignified nod as if to say that it approved of what it saw, and that the children were doing very well indeed.

Z
✦ Z is for Zebra

A zebra galloped around the classroom as the final letter glowed, its stripes leaving brief trails of light with every step. It stopped at the edge of the rug, turned once, and was gone, leaving the class in a silence that was full of something warm and excellent.

When the adventure ended and the classroom was just a classroom again, Miss Thompson smiled at her students with the particular smile that teachers keep for their most important moments.

"Remember, children," she said, "the alphabet is the key to unlocking wonderful stories and knowledge. Every letter you learn is a door that opens. What was your favorite letter today?"

The children erupted, all speaking at once, which Miss Thompson had expected and did not mind at all. They were newly excited about their ABCs, and that, as any teacher will tell you, is everything.
