🎶 Title: Exploring Musical Symbols with Our Note Worthy Friend!

🧒 Grade Level: Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

⏰ Duration: 30-40 minutes

🎯 Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common musical symbols.

  • Learn the names and sounds of notes.

  • Develop rhythm and coordination through movement and games.

  • Engage in imaginative play with the Note Worthy Friend character.

🔷 Materials:

  • Note Worthy Music Rug

  • Printouts of the character (Note Worthy Friend)

  • Flashcards of musical symbols (matching those on the rug’s border)

  • Small percussion instruments (e.g., tambourines, shakers)

  • Whiteboard or chart paper

🌟 Warm-Up (5 minutes):

  1. Invite students to sit around the Note Worthy Rug.

  2. Introduce the Note Worthy Friend. Explain that this friend lives on the rug and loves to help us learn music!

🎵 Lesson Activities:

1️⃣ Symbol Hunt (10 minutes)

  • Move around the rug together, pointing to the symbols.

  • Have the Note Worthy Friend “talk” about each symbol.

  • Example: “This is a treble clef! Can you trace it with your finger?”

  • Repeat for 4-5 symbols, ensuring everyone gets a turn to find and trace.

2️⃣ Rhythm Play (10 minutes)

  • Pick one symbol at a time and demonstrate a basic rhythm pattern.

  • Students repeat the pattern with instruments or by clapping.

  • Let the Note Worthy Friend “conduct” the rhythm play.

3️⃣ Musical Movement (5 minutes)

  • Choose a few symbols and assign a movement to each.

  • Example: quarter note = jump, eighth note = wiggle, rest = freeze.

  • Play a simple tune and have students move based on the “musical cues.”

4️⃣ Story Time with Note Worthy Friend (5 minutes)

  • Tell a short story about the Note Worthy Friend traveling along the staff lines and discovering different musical symbols.

  • Encourage students to create their own movement or sounds for parts of the story.

📝 Reflection and Wrap-Up (5 minutes):

  • Gather together and ask:

    • “What was your favorite symbol today?”

    • “How did our friend help you learn?”

  • End with a short, cheerful “Goodbye Song” that incorporates some of the learned symbols.

🌈 Assessment:

  • Observe students’ ability to identify symbols and replicate rhythms.

  • Listen for accurate note names or rhythmic patterns.

  • Encourage shy students to participate in movement or sound creation.

🎉 Extensions:

  • Create a “Musical Symbol Scavenger Hunt” where students find and draw symbols around the room.

  • Let students draw a new friend for the Note Worthy Friend and share how their new friend loves to make music.
