Description

The Closures Sensory Wall Panel is a HABA birch veneer activity panel dedicated entirely to fasteners and closures. A lacing panel with bright orange cord, a zipper, button closures in contrasting colors, a snap fastener, and a buckle are all mounted on a single 16" x 17" board.

Each one a different fine motor challenge, each one a skill children use in daily life. The panel can be wall-mounted or used flat on a tabletop, making it one of the more versatile options in the HABA Sensory Wall Series.

The focus on functional closures is what distinguishes this panel from general sensory or tactile boards. Every element on the panel directly mirrors a real-world dressing skill.

Zipper, button, snap, and buckle children encounter on their own clothing every day makes this a great toy for practicing real life. That direct connection to daily independence makes this panel particularly purposeful in occupational therapy settings.

What's on the Panel

Lacing panel with bright orange cord • Zipper closure • Button closures in contrasting colors • Snap fastenerBuckle closure

Each closure type requires a distinct hand movement and level of finger strength - lacing demands bilateral coordination and threading, buttons require pinching and pushing through a hole, snaps need direct finger pressure, zippers require a grip-and-pull motion, and buckles involve spatial problem-solving as well as fine motor control. Together they cover the full range of dressing skills that occupational therapy commonly addresses with young children.

Why This Works in Professional Environments

Direct connection to daily living skills

Unlike general fine motor activities, every element on the Closures panel mirrors a specific dressing task children are expected to perform independently. For occupational therapists working on Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), the panel provides targeted practice on the exact closures children encounter on their own clothing - without requiring the child to be partially dressed, without the frustration of working on live clothing, and in a format that children engage with voluntarily.

Wall or tabletop - two working positions

Most HABA panels are wall-only. The Closures panel can be used flat on a tabletop, which opens it to a different working position - seated at a table rather than standing at a wall. For therapists who need to vary the working position as part of a session, or for early childhood classrooms where tabletop work is the standard format, that flexibility makes this panel more versatile than a fixed wall installation.

Birch veneer fits any professional aesthetic

HABA's crosswise-layered birch panels sealed with water-based, solvent-free lacquer give the Closures panel the same warm, furniture-quality look as the rest of the Sensory Wall Series. In a therapy office, pediatric clinic, or Montessori classroom, the natural wood construction fits the environment without looking like a toy. The ten-year manufacturer's warranty reflects the quality of construction behind that finish.

Where These Work Best

Occupational Therapy Clinics

The Closures panel is purpose-built for ADL skill development. Buttoning, zipping, snapping, buckling, and lacing are among the most commonly targeted dressing skills in pediatric OT, and having them all on a single panel in a durable, appealing format gives therapists a reliable go-to tool for individual and group sessions. Children engage with it as a toy rather than a therapeutic exercise, which removes resistance and increases voluntary repetition.

Early Childhood Classrooms and Special Education

Dressing independence is a standard goal in Pre-K and kindergarten curricula, and in special education programs where self-care skills are explicitly taught. The Closures panel provides structured practice on each closure type in an engaging, low-frustration format. Used at a table station during free choice or as a targeted activity during small group time, it gives children repeated exposure to the mechanics of each fastener in a context that feels playful rather than instructional.

Sensory Rooms and Pediatric Waiting Areas

Wall-mounted in a sensory room or pediatric waiting area, the Closures panel provides purposeful fine motor engagement that children self-direct. The variety of closure types means children move from element to element naturally, and the tactile variety - the texture of the lacing cord, the click of the snap, the resistance of the buckle - delivers genuine sensory input alongside the motor challenge. No adult facilitation required between uses.

The Closures panel can be mounted directly to the wall or installed on HABA Guide Rails, which allow the order and arrangement of multiple panels to be reconfigured regularly. Combining it with other HABA Sensory Wall panels creates a customizable multi-panel installation suited to the specific goals of your space.

Cleaning Your Waiting Area Toys

Keeping waiting area toys clean is simple when you use the right products. Our wall toys and activity panels are built with smooth, hard surfaces specifically designed to clean quickly and safely alongside other high-contact surfaces in your facility.

We recommend hospital-grade disinfectant wipes such as those from the PDI line, which are widely used in medical, dental, and therapy settings. When choosing a disinfectant wipe for your waiting area toys, look for the following:

Effective against germs Choose wipes that clearly state effectiveness against common bacteria and viruses. This information is listed on the packaging based on the wipe's active ingredients.
Safe for children and staff Look for wipes labeled safe for use in environments where children are present. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, including any hand-washing recommendations after use.
Low odor and low residue Modern disinfectant wipes are designed to clean thoroughly without leaving harsh chemical fumes or irritating residue, making them ideal for enclosed spaces like waiting rooms and therapy clinics.
Fast drying Most hospital-grade wipes air dry within approximately 90 seconds, allowing toys to be returned to use immediately with minimal downtime for your staff.
Surface compatible Always confirm the wipe is appropriate for the surface being cleaned. Some formulations are not recommended for certain finishes, so checking the label prevents surface damage over time.
Environmentally conscious Many disinfectant wipes are now made with biodegradable materials and reduced chemical concentrations, offering strong cleaning performance with a lower environmental footprint.

Using the right disinfectant wipes keeps your waiting area toys clean, safe, and ready for the next child, while protecting both your patients and your staff. If you have questions about cleaning a specific product, we are always happy to help at help@sensoryedge.com or 800-734-8019.
