Description

The Sound Sensory Exploration Wall Panel is a large square wall-mounted board that adds an auditory dimension to sensory wall exploration. A drum with mallet is mounted directly on the panel, giving children a sound-producing element to interact with alongside the tactile surfaces around it.

The combination of sound, texture, movement, and visual variety on a single board makes this panel one of the most multi-sensory wall installations available at this scale, without requiring a sensory room or specialized facility to install and use.

Mounting hardware included.

What the Panel Includes

The center of the board is a large circular disc divided into four texture quadrants: chenille, shag fur, cork, and smooth surface. The drum with mallet mounts below the center disc and is the panel's primary sound-producing element - children strike it with the mallet and hear an immediate auditory response to their action, a direct cause-and-effect loop that is both motivating and developmentally meaningful.

Beyond the drum and center disc, the board includes a corkboard panel, a green artificial grass surface, a corrugated texture strip, a twisted rope element, spinning fidget pieces, a row of sensory bump dots along the curved edge, two fiber burst tactile balls, a visual hourglass timer, and a wooden bead slide along the bottom. Each element offers a distinct sensory input, and the variety across the board sustains engagement across multiple visits rather than being exhausted in a single session.

Auditory Processing and Cause-and-Effect Learning

The drum introduces an auditory channel that purely tactile sensory panels do not offer. When a child strikes the drum and hears the result, they are experiencing cause and effect through sound, not just touch or sight.

Children naturally vary their striking speed and force to see how the sound changes, which is an early form of experimental inquiry. For children with auditory processing differences or those in auditory-focused therapy, the drum provides a wall-mounted, controlled auditory input that a therapist can incorporate into a session without bringing additional instruments into the space. The visual hourglass element adds a time-awareness component that connects to self-regulation and waiting skills.

How It Differs from the Jumbo Panel

The Jumbo Sensory Exploration Panel (MB199382) is larger at 46"x57" and emphasizes tactile variety with mirror domes and a broader disc array. This panel is the same construction at a more compact 40¼" square, and it adds the auditory dimension that the Jumbo does not include. Spaces that need both visual and sound-based sensory input in a single installation, or that have a square wall footprint rather than a wide rectangular one, will find this panel the more appropriate fit.

Where These Work Best
Occupational therapy and speech-language clinics

The drum component makes this panel directly applicable to auditory processing, rhythm, and sound discrimination goals in speech-language therapy. In OT, the bead slide, spinning elements, and textured surfaces address fine motor and tactile discrimination goals simultaneously. A therapist can structure a session around a single element or use the board as a free-exploration station that reveals which sensory channels a child gravitates toward and which they avoid.

Pre-K and kindergarten classrooms

The panel's square format fits well on a classroom wall between windows, shelving, or display boards. Mounted at child height in a sensory or fine motor center, it provides an independent exploration station that covers sound, texture, movement, and visual input without requiring any materials to set up or put away. The hourglass timer element is a useful classroom management tool that children can operate themselves during transitions or timed activities.

Children's museums, libraries, and pediatric waiting rooms

The drum is a natural draw in a public space - children hear other children using it and are drawn toward the panel before they even reach it. In a library or museum environment, the variety of elements sustains engagement across the full span of a typical visit. The commercial-grade laminated construction handles the repeated handling and varied use patterns of a public installation without degrading.

Cleaning Your Waiting Area Toys

Keeping waiting area toys clean is simple when you use the right products. Our wall toys and activity panels are built with smooth, hard surfaces specifically designed to clean quickly and safely alongside other high-contact surfaces in your facility.

We recommend hospital-grade disinfectant wipes such as those from the PDI line, which are widely used in medical, dental, and therapy settings. When choosing a disinfectant wipe for your waiting area toys, look for the following:

Effective against germs Choose wipes that clearly state effectiveness against common bacteria and viruses. This information is listed on the packaging based on the wipe's active ingredients.
Safe for children and staff Look for wipes labeled safe for use in environments where children are present. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, including any hand-washing recommendations after use.
Low odor and low residue Modern disinfectant wipes are designed to clean thoroughly without leaving harsh chemical fumes or irritating residue, making them ideal for enclosed spaces like waiting rooms and therapy clinics.
Fast drying Most hospital-grade wipes air dry within approximately 90 seconds, allowing toys to be returned to use immediately with minimal downtime for your staff.
Surface compatible Always confirm the wipe is appropriate for the surface being cleaned. Some formulations are not recommended for certain finishes, so checking the label prevents surface damage over time.
Environmentally conscious Many disinfectant wipes are now made with biodegradable materials and reduced chemical concentrations, offering strong cleaning performance with a lower environmental footprint.

Using the right disinfectant wipes keeps your waiting area toys clean, safe, and ready for the next child, while protecting both your patients and your staff. If you have questions about cleaning a specific product, we are always happy to help at help@sensoryedge.com or 800-734-8019.
