Sunny Day Relay

Sunny Day Relay!
A high-energy team relay using the Oval Sunny Day Learn and Play Rug- racing to letters, numbers, and the sun in the middle while building early literacy and numeracy skills.
The Oval Sunny Day Learn and Play Rug has letters around its edges, numbers scattered across its face, and a bright sun right at the center- which means it's already a perfectly designed game board. Sunny Day Relay turns that layout into a team relay race where every sprint teaches something: a letter sound, a number, a word.
It's structured enough to reinforce early literacy and numeracy goals. It's fast enough that no one notices they're learning. And it ends with a Sunbeam Spin- which is worth doing for its own sake.
Quick Setup
Lay Out the Rug
Place the Oval Sunny Day Rug flat in an open classroom area with clear space around all sides for running. The oval shape naturally defines two sides- one for each team.
Form Two Teams
Divide students into two teams. Assign Team 1 to the left side of the rug, Team 2 to the right. Each team lines up behind a starting point just off the rug edge.
Prepare the Call Cards
Make or print flashcards with letters, numbers, and simple words. A spinner works great too. Shuffle or randomize- the surprise of the next call is half the excitement.
Set Up Scoring
A whiteboard or tally sheet is all you need. Score by round completion- the first team to reach the sun after finishing all their turns wins.
Three Phases, One Race
The teacher calls out a letter or number at random. The first player in each team races to find and stand on that spot on the rug.
-
Land on the correct letter or number
-
Clap 3 times and say it aloud
-
First to land correctly scores the round
After landing, the player must complete a quick challenge before tagging their teammate:
-
Letter landed: Say a word that starts with it
-
Number landed: Clap or stomp that many times
-
Extra challenge: Spell a short word using the letter
Challenge complete? Sprint back and tag the next teammate. The relay continues until every player has gone- then the final player races for the sun in the middle.
-
Run back and tag the next in line
-
Continue through all team members
-
Final player sprints to the center sun ☀️
Reaching the Sun
First Team to the Sun Wins!
The first team to complete all their turns and reach the sun in the center wins. The final player on the winning team celebrates with a Sunbeam Spin- twirl and jump! For younger students, focus on participation- everyone wins for trying their best.
Three Ways to Play
Slow & Steady Mode
Instead of running, students hop to their spots. Slows the pace for younger groups, adds a gross motor challenge, and keeps the whole class giggling at the bouncy approach to each letter.
Memory Challenge
Before answering their own question, students must recall the last letter or number that was called. Adds a working-memory layer that makes the game significantly harder- great for K–2 who've mastered the base game.
Teamwork Edition
Teammates can whisper the answer to help a player who's unsure. Shifts the energy from competition to collaboration- ideal for inclusive classrooms or when you want to prioritize participation over speed.
