Rainbows are meteorological phenomena that occur when light is refracted, or bent, as it passes through water droplets in the air. The basic principles behind the formation of rainbows are well understood, and the phenomenon can be explained through the interaction of light with water.
When sunlight, which is composed of various colors of light, enters a raindrop, it slows down and bends due to the change in the speed of light in water compared to air. This bending of light is called refraction.
As the light continues to travel through the raindrop, it also undergoes dispersion. Dispersion is the separation of light into its various colors (the visible spectrum) because different colors of light are refracted by different amounts. This separation is due to the different wavelengths of light.
After dispersion, the light undergoes internal reflection off the inside surface of the raindrop, which acts like a mirror. This reflection occurs at the inner surface of the raindrop.
After the internal reflection, the light exits the raindrop and is refracted again as it passes from the water back into the air.
The combination of refraction, dispersion, and internal reflection within the raindrop causes the different colors of light to spread out in a circular pattern. This forms a complete circle of colors, with red on the outer edge and violet on the inner edge. However, this circle is usually only partially visible to us, and we typically see a semicircular arc in the sky.
The observer sees the rainbow when they are positioned with their back to the sunlight, and the raindrops in the atmosphere are in front of them. The exact angle at which the observer sees the rainbow depends on the angle of the incoming sunlight and the size of the raindrops.
